Rwanda Scouting Adventure

Lakes, Rainforest & Leadership

Building character by connecting scouts to nature, culture, and global citizenship through outdoor service, discovery, and adventure

Overview

Set against the breathtaking landscapes of Rwanda, this immersive Scouting Adventure blends outdoor mastery, cultural discovery, biodiversity exploration, and leadership development into a once-in-a-lifetime experience. From lakeside camping on Lake Kivu—featuring fishing, canoeing, and shoreline exploration—to hands-on sustainable development engagement, Cub Scouts will encounter Rwanda's remarkable ecosystems and rich cultural traditions firsthand. The journey includes a guided safari through the ancient, biodiverse Nyungwe Forest, Africa's oldest forest and home to some of the continent's most unique wildlife, alongside archery, outdoor skills training, and moments of reflection designed to strengthen character and global awareness. The experience culminates in shared growth, leadership building, and meaningful cross-cultural exchange. Purposeful, adventurous, and transformational, this program is designed to inspire the next generation of global leaders.

Program Details

7 days of adventure, discovery, and leadership

Day 1 – July 12

Participants arrive in Kigali and transfer directly to the campsite on Lake Kivu in Nyamasheke District, Western Province, beginning the adventure with a scenic drive through Rwanda's rolling hills and lush countryside. Meeting Rwanda Scouting Association Cub Scouts upon arrival, Scouts will settle in, set up camp, and take part in a brief orientation to prepare for the days ahead. Participants are encouraged to consider arriving in Kigali a day early if international travel schedules or recovery time from long-haul flights are a concern, ensuring a comfortable and energized start to the experience.

Day 2 – July 13

Fishing Expedition

(In collaboration with Rwanda Scouting Association Cub Scouts)

Day 2 immerses Cub Scouts in a full Fishing Expedition, centered on a friendly Catch–and–Eat competition, with opportunities to catch and learn about fish from Lake Kivu—home to Nile Perch, African Catfish, Redbreast Tilapia, Blue-spotted Tilapia, and the regionally famous Sambaza. This day strengthens outdoor skills, teamwork, and environmental awareness. Daytime pursuit includes canoe skills, water safety, shoreline exploration, and nature journaling. At night scouts may participate in an optional night fishing experience alongside local fishermen using lanterns, nets, coordinated rowing, and traditional songs to attract fish—an unforgettable cultural tradition unique to Lake Kivu. Day 2 concludes with a lakeside cookout and campfire program at night featuring storytelling, reflection, and awards from the day's fishing challenge, capping off a high-energy, memory-making day.

Day 3 – July 14

Fishing & Sustainable Development

Day 3 continues Cub Scouts' Fishing Expedition, centered on a friendly Catch–Photo–Release competition, with opportunities to catch and learn about fish from Lake Kivu—home to Nile Perch, African Catfish, Redbreast Tilapia, Blue-spotted Tilapia, and the regionally famous Sambaza. This day strengthens outdoor skills, teamwork, and environmental awareness. Off-campsite, Cubs will participate in hands-on sustainable development projects, including tree planting and tea harvesting & processing, learning each step of the process while contributing to local conservation and community efforts.

Day 4 – July 15

Fishing & Nyungwe Forest Safari

Day 4 will be the final fishing day for the Cubs as they explore yet another area of the vast Lake Kivu. In addition to the day's fishing expedition, Cub Scouts will enjoy an age-appropriate Forest Safari off-campsite in Nyungwe Forest National Park, exploring trails, observing wildlife, and learning about forest ecosystems.

Day 5 – July 16

Archery & Outdoor Skills Challenge

Day 5 focuses on skill-building, precision, and confidence through a full day of archery and outdoor skills development, with friendly competitions designed for each age group. Cubs will rotate through stations that may include archery fundamentals, target accuracy challenges, navigation and orienteering, shelter-building, knot work, first-aid scenarios, teamwork challenges, and traditional outdoor problem-solving activities commonly practiced in regional scouting programs. Select activities may take place off-campsite, allowing exposure to specialized facilities or natural terrain. The day emphasizes discipline, focus, safety, and leadership while introducing regionally relevant outdoor skills rooted in Rwanda's scouting and land-based traditions.

Day 6 – July 17

Cultural Immersion

Day 6 offers quite a distinct experience. Cub Scouts engage in a rich cultural immersion day focused on community connection and creativity, including traditional music and dance, storytelling, hands-on crafts, and shared cultural activities with local communities—fostering appreciation, curiosity, and global friendship.

Day 7 – July 18

Reflection, Recognition & Departure

Day 7 serves as a meaningful close to the Rwanda Scouting Adventure, offering a relaxed and reflective morning designed to celebrate growth, connection, and achievement. The program includes a guided reflection session, group sharing, and a closing circle that allows scouts to reflect on their experiences, leadership growth, and cultural exchanges throughout the week. Certificates of participation will be presented, and Scout leaders will have dedicated time to award badges, merits, or recognitions earned during the program.

Light cultural engagement and informal fellowship will continue throughout the morning, allowing participants to connect, exchange memories, and prepare for departure at a comfortable pace. Official transfers back to Kigali International Airport will commence at approximately 1:00 PM. Participants with earlier departure schedules may arrange independent transfers prior to that time.

The day concludes with a sense of accomplishment, connection, and shared purpose—bringing the adventure to a thoughtful and meaningful close.
